Pre-transplant strength training can help individuals to optimize and maintain their functional status before surgery. Impaired exercise capacity is an important predictor of thoracic surgery outcomes and survival (Spruit et al., 2013). Muscle atrophy in skeletal muscle is common post lung transplant. Strength training builds skeletal muscle mass and for some adds much needed weight to the body. This is important because going into transplant underweight is an independent risk factor that contributes to poor outcomes post transplant (Lederer et al., 2009).
